Property Owners in St. Vincent and the Grenadines will this year begin paying a 15-percent increase in Property Taxes, which Prime Minister Dr. Ralph Gonsalves says would help maintain the economic growth in this country.
In announcing the fiscal measure, Dr. Gonsalves said that the Annual Rental Value (ARV) used to access property taxes is difficult to determine, especially in areas where owners occupy all of the properties
He said that Government is expected to generate an additional 3.2 million dollars this year from this property tax increase.
The Prime Minister says some property owners will be excluded from paying the increased rates.
A Regional Financial Analyst has pointed to the importance of good governance in ensuring the highest level of transparency and accountability of financial institutions.
Dr. Valda Henry spoke on the issue of Corporate Governance during a Panel Discussion last week, organized by the National Insurance Services (NIS) as part of activities to observe its 25th anniversary.
The discussion focused on the topic: The Changing Role of Social Security in the 21st Century: Implications of the Global Financial Crisis, Labour Market Dynamics and Corporate Governance.
Dr. Henry said the lack of good governance was a key factor in the failure of some of the world’s leading institutions in recent years.
Dr. Henry said training is a critical component of good governance
The budget presented by Prime Minister Dr. Ralph Gonsalves shows no stark contrast to the one presented last year. In responding to Dr. Gonsalves budget presentation on Monday opposition leader whose turn it was to respond yesterday morning said, this country’s fiscal situation will continue to deteriorate under the ULP’s mismanagement of the country resources.
Mr. Eustace said this country’s economy remains a major shrinking economy and what he heard on Monday, during Prime Minister Dr. Ralph Gonsalves speech were several hours of excuses for failure.
St. Vincent and the Grenadines he added led by the ULP has ended its 4th year of negative growth, and was recently ranked last by the IMF in terms of growth in GDP in Latin America and the Caribbean for 2011.
Mr. Eustace said this is an unprecedented moment in the country’s history where many people both in the public and private sector has lost their jobs and where many families are struggling to make ends meet.
He further stated that all of this is happening while the government continues to keep a number of retirees whose job descriptions are not clear and who continue to utilize a lot of financial resources while many young people are left unemployed. This he says shows the insensitivity of the ULP government.
Opposition leader the Hon. Arhnim Eustace yesterday morning outlined why he is the most qualify person to deal with the economic challenges that are currently facing St. Vincent and the Grenadines.
In his opening remarks in parliament Mr. Eustace said in the next few months he would have served this country particularly the people of East Kingstown for 14 consecutive years but prior to that he was a civil servant for ten years rising to the level of Permanent Secretary and subsequently fiscal advisor to the government for four years, a total of 28 years in direct service to Vincentians.
He further worked as a regional public servant with the Caribbean Development Bank for 17 years, beginning as an administrative officer and for the last 8 years of his tenure as director of projects for the Caribbean countries.
In 1985 he was seconded by the CDB to the UN development program which assigned him to the government of St. Vincent and the Grenadines as director general of finance to review and make changes to the fiscal situation in this country.
The opposition leader said while this is no easy feat, given this experience he is the most qualify person in the House of Parliament to analyze and comment on the economic health of St. Vincent and the Grenadines.
It is with a sense of shock and deep sadness that the SVG Gospel Fest Committee received the news of the passing of Mr. Christopher George. He died at the Milton Cato Memorial Hospital earlier this morning – Wednesday 11th January aftera brief illness.
At the time of his passing Mr. George was the Gospel Fest Zonal Coordinator for the North Leeward Zone having served in that capacity for over seven years. As Zonal Coordinator he was responsible for organising Gospel Fest activities and working with artistes in that area. George was very dedicated and served with a great deal of enthusiasm in a challenging area and contributing significantly to the festival. He was also the Head Teacher at the Westwood Primary School.
Christopher George was an established gospel recording artiste and performer producing three albums among them “Get Ready”. He recorded a number of Gospel Fest Festival songs including: “Declare God’s Praises”, “Get Your Praise On”, “Give God The Glory” and “Island Praise”. He was also the founder and leader of High Praise Ministries with his children following in his footsteps and performing as well.
On the eve of the celebration of the 10th anniversary of SVG Gospel Fest which scheduled to be staged in April this year, the members of the committee mourn his loss and extend deepest sympathies to his wife and family and members of the North Leeward gospel community. May he rest in peace.

The ULP Government have been selling Treasury Bills for the last 9 years. The Treasury Bills are sold at a discounted rate i.e. January 4th 2012 was discounted at 5.82% repayable in 91 days. That is equivalent to paying an interest rate in excess of 23% a year.
I write to bring this to your attention because the IMF are under the misconception that we are not borrowing at commercial rates. Gonsalves told us the we are getting cheap money at 2% from ALBA. Why did he not tell the people that we are using the Bond Market and selling Treasury Bills, paying through the nose for that money, in excess of 23% per annum.
Dr. Slater said yesterday in parliament that we have not taken any commercial money and are borrowing at 2%. That is not true we borrowed money to bail out the NCB bank at much greater rates than that. We also sell our treasury bills at 10 times that amount.
Below are the proposed Treasury Bill sales
January 4th 2012 Government of St Vincent and the Grenadines 91-day EC$25M, 5.82% Treasury Bill [=23.28% p.a.]
February 1st 2012: Government of St Vincent and the Grenadines 91-day EC$25M, 5.82% Treasury Bill.
March 1st 2012: Government of St Vincent and the Grenadines 91-day EC$25M, 5.82% Treasury Bill.
April 10th 2012: Government of St Vincent and the Grenadines 91-day EC$25M, 5.82% Treasury Bill.
June 4th 2012: Government of St Vincent and the Grenadines 91-day EC$25M, 5.82% Treasury Bill
May 4th 2012: Government of St Vincent and the Grenadines 91-day EC$25M, 5.82% Treasury Bill
June 4th 2012: Government of St Vincent and the Grenadines 91-day EC$25M, 5.82% Treasury Bill
This action by the government is one of the things that has helpde to bankrupt the country.

Kingstown, St. Vincent- January 11, 2012- Vincentian Anglican education administrator, Mrs. Jacqueline Glasgow- Browne will join three other persons across the Anglican Communion in London as first fellows in the fellowship scheme set up by the Anglican Alliance and funded by the Commonwealth Scholarship Commission.
Glasgow- Browne is a Senior Education Officer responsible for Primary Schools in St. Vincent and the Grenadines and holds a B. Ed in teaching of Mathematics education from the UWI, Mona, M. The Vincentian will join David Agbo of Nigeria, Joe Takeli from the Solomon Islands and Ghanaian Seidu Adam and will spend eight weeks visiting UK education services and specialist education institutions supporting early year education and curriculum development to see what lessons they can learn for delivering education services at home.
The Fellowship scheme, the first of its type for the Commonwealth programme will allow the participants to spend two weeks studying local authority education services and work shadowing senior officials, and have similar experiences with diocesan education services in two English dioceses.
They will also visit Nottingham University which has a special unit that works on leadership in education and especially on the role of faith schools. The team will be supervised to produce resource materials so that other education administrators across the Communion can get the benefit of their experience.
Sally Keeble, Anglican Alliance director said: “This is a ground-breaking scheme, which will provide a good opportunity for education administrators across the Communion to extend their experience and expertise. Education is the biggest driver of development, and the Church is a major provider of education in developing countries. It is excellent that the Commonwealth Scholarship Commission has given us this support and provides such an excellent opportunity to build on our education services. ”
