A local business man has pledged to donate $100, 000 dollars towards the construction of the international airport at Argyle. Mr. Denzil Bacchus of Advent Investment Company handed over the first installment of $20, 000 to Prime Minister Dr. Ralph Gonsalves yesterday at Cabinet Room.
Dr. Gonsalves said a few weeks ago, he was approached by Mr. Bacchus and his friend Moulton Mayers, and it was then that Bacchus had indicated that he would like to make a donation. This donation he said will be made in installments of EC 20,000 dollars. Gonsalves said that whilst a number of persons here and in the Diaspora have made contribution, clearly this was on was very significant.
He described Mr. Bacchus’s family as one which has shown great commitment to the Vincentian community and his contribution is a manifestation of the continuation of their commitment. Mr. Bacchus said he had indicated years ago to the Prime Minister that he fully supported the airport. He said he has travelled two million miles and to him the airport is the most important project in St. Vincen and the Grenadines hence his donation. The international airport is scheduled to be completed in 2014.

Much respect to Mr Bacchus in putting his hard earn money into the Argyle Airport…but one cannot help thinking it is a waste of good money. The argyle airport is a money pit with no visible means of finishing anytime soon…2014? If the Argyle Airport is done in 2014; it would probably take another five years before any plane lands there…maybe a spray plane and a helicopter for sham.
Its beyond my comprehension that there is hardly any discussion on the part of the NDP about the Airport. It appears that the NDP is afraid to come out strongly one way or the other on the issue of the Airport. Once in a blue moon you hear sporadic on-the-fence critiques coming from various acolytes of the NDP…but no real sustain pressure of putting Gonsalves feet to the fire on the most shambolic manner of financing a project of this magnitude.
The biggest blunder by the NDP in the last election is not stating a clear and definitive position on the airport project. Had I been advising the NDP I would have OPPOSE POINT BLANK THE BUILDING OF THE AIRPORT IN THE MANNER THAT IT WAS BEING DONE BY GONSLAVES.Instead the NDP got caught up with public misguided sentiments and fell for the oldest political trick in the book…if going to bluff, bluff with all your chips…Gonsalves did exactly that and the NDP FOLD.
Now is 2012…the airport is scheduled to finish in 2 years?…has anyone been to Aryle recently? Pleeease…the biggest hoax if ever there was one…just string them along comrade…the next election is in the bag.
