The talk among many Vincentians lately is whether or not the National Insurance Scheme (NIS) is in good financial standing. This after it was revealed by the opposition leader the Hon. Arhnim Eustace that NIS profit fell from 27 millions dollars in 2008 to less than 6 million in 2010.
The opposition leader also revealed that by the year 2016 the NIS would not have enough revenues to cover its expenses unless the company is restructured. This disclosure is prompting Vincentians to wonder if the NIS will eventually bankrupt itself and whether they will be losing their pensions and other benefits.
The leader of the New Democratic Party who is an economist by profession is calling on the government to reform the company before it is too late.
Mr. Eustace said with this big fall in profit from 2008 to 2010 he is also concern about the loan that was taken from the NIS to assist National Properties.
